Some places are best discovered slowly.
A quiet forest, a lakeside bench or a peaceful valley can reveal as much as the most spectacular viewpoint.
These are three places that invite you to pause, look a little longer and simply enjoy being there.
Chastè Peninsula
A small piece of land between the lake and the mountains.
Chastè is a peninsula just outside the village of Sils. To reach it, you cross an open plain, with Lake Sils on one side and the mountains towards Maloja in the distance. The peninsula appears at the end of this open stretch: a small, forested rise extending into the lake, almost suspended between land and water.
A circular path takes you all the way around it. But as you walk, it isn't only the side of the peninsula you are seeing that changes. What lies across the lake changes constantly too. The mountains appear from different angles, the water takes on different colours, and sometimes just a few steps are enough to find a breeze that wasn't there before, or a part of the forest where, because of the slope and its position, the sunlight reaches the ground in a completely different way.
Perhaps this is exactly what I love about Chastè: with every step, something changes.
Along the path, there are several benches overlooking the lake. They are not simply places to rest. They are a way of remaining a little longer within this small world of its own before leaving.
Each one offers a different view: of the peninsula, the mountains and the stretch of water between them. And the lake itself is never the same. Sometimes it is covered in reflections, sometimes rippled by small waves, and sometimes moved with such force that it almost feels like being by the sea. In winter, it can become a still surface of ice or disappear beneath an immense expanse of white.
I often return to Chastè. There are mornings when I wake up and already know that I need to go there.
Walking around the peninsula, for me, feels a little like resynchronising with something I couldn't even define. I almost always stop at the same three benches. From each one, the view is so different from the last that it feels as though my thoughts, too, are being asked to travel in a different direction each time.
And when I leave, somehow, my thoughts seem to feel a little better too.

Val Fex
A valley where everything feels in its right place.
Some places impress you at first sight. Others reveal their beauty little by little. Val Fex belongs to the latter.
As soon as you enter the valley, the cars disappear and the landscape settles into its natural rhythm: meadows crossed by a mountain stream, larch forests, alpine huts and peaks that quietly accompany your gaze without ever demanding your attention.
Perhaps it is the balance between all these elements that makes this place so special. Nothing tries to stand out, yet everything seems to belong exactly where it is.
There is no need to walk the entire valley. Even an hour's stroll is enough to be carried along by its atmosphere.
It is one of those places that reminds us that beauty sometimes comes simply from harmony.

The Forests
A place that is never quite the same.
There are places in the Engadin that invite you to look far into the distance. The forests invite you to do the opposite.
As soon as you step beneath the trees, the landscape changes. The sounds become softer, the light filters gently through the branches and your attention naturally shifts to smaller things: the scent of the woods, the texture of the bark, the moss beneath your feet or the sound of the wind moving through the larches.
Every season reveals a different forest.
In summer, the shade offers a welcome refuge on warmer days. In autumn, the larches slowly turn from green to gold, filling the valleys with extraordinary colours. If you walk quietly, you may even hear the distant call of red deer during the rutting season.
Don't worry about finding the most beautiful forest. Choose a path, walk slowly and let the forest reveal itself, one step at a time.
It is one of those places that reminds us that beauty is not always found in wide panoramas. Sometimes it lives much closer.
